Microbial Ecology of Switchgrass for Sustainable Agriculture
This project investigates how recurrent selection of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum)—a perennial grass with strong bioenergy potential—affects the composition and function of its associated microbiome. By combining metagenomic analyses, microbial culturing, and functional assays, we aim to uncover how plants recruit beneficial microorganisms and how these interactions enhance productivity, soil health, and nutrient use efficiency. Conducted as part of the Living Lab – Carbon-Neutral Milk initiative, this work supports the development of farming practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ultimately, the project seeks to identify microbial mechanisms and communities that promote resilient, low-impact, and sustainable agricultural systems.
